'Left 4 Dead' Is Coming Back As Part Of 'Dying Light' Crossover

Back from the dead.

Valve's apparent allergy to the number three means we'll be probably never see a third entry in the fantastic zombie co-op shooter franchise Left 4 Dead. Left 4 Dead 2 is fast approaching its tenth anniversary, after all, so it might be time to accept that a follow-up just isn't on the cards.

Thankfully, it seems we can count on the fine folk at Techland to pick up the slack and deliver a shot in the arm to the dormant zombie franchise, as the studio's very own undead adventure Dying Light will be getting a special Left 4 Dead 2 crossover event. Praise be to Techland.

The surprise announcement came via the official Dying Light Twitter account, though details are frustratingly vague at this point. All we know right know is that we can expect some "serious zombie slaying" when "Left 4 Dead 2 style" arrives in Dying Light.

The post also features both games logos side by side - it's great to see the Left 4 Dead name again, by the way - which suggests that this crossover event is very much in collaboration with Valve, though just how involved the Left 4 Dead studio is with the event remains to be seen.

The most likely scenario is that Dying Light will be introducing some kind of multiplayer horde mode that plays as a direct tribute to Left 4 Dead, perhaps complete with mechanics, weapons, enemies, and characters borrowed from the Valve-developed franchise. Ooh, I bet Techland's take on witches would be horrifying.

If we're really in the business of dreaming though, I'd very much like it if Techland were putting together a recreation of the entirety of Left 4 Dead 2 in Dying Light. I'm aware that's a very greedy dream, but just imagine being able to play through a reimagining of one of the best co-op games of all time. The very thought makes me shudder in anticipation.

We'll no doubt learn more about this Dying Light X Left 4 Dead 2 event soon. Looking a little further ahead, we can expect Techland to drop Dying Light 2 in the first half of 2020.

It certainly sounds like a beast of a game, with Techland claiming that it'll feature at least 100 hours of gameplay, multiple playthroughs, heaps of side missions, and a minimum of four years post launch support. Who needs Left 4 Dead 3, right?

I do. I definitely do.
