New Star Wars Shooter From EA Rumoured For 2021

New Star Wars Shooter From EA Rumoured For 2021

Shoot first, debate who *actually* shot first later

We know that both Star Wars games new and old are (apparently) in the works right now, so it shouldn't surprise anyone reading this that fresh rumours have emerged regarding a new shooter in the family-friendly sci-fi franchise. So here we are, bringing you those rumours, because content never sleeps. If only ol' Darth Plagueis had thought the same way, eh?

Gamerant reports that a Reddit user with kind of a track record for accurate leaks has posted news regarding a new Star Wars shooter from publisher EA - who, as we know, are no longer exclusively making Star Wars games, but will still be, um, making some. We heard late last year that the publisher was working on something "very unique", but these details point to something a little more conservative. Perhaps it's a side-project to a bigger game.

Anyway, said Reddit user, OrcaOrcaisnotalone, writes "EA is working on a small-scale Star Wars game that will release later this year", and subsequently adds that it'll be a shooter, but neither the first-person style of the Battlefront series, nor the third-person action of Jedi: Fallen Order. But it definitely "involves gun play", so make of that what you will.

The post also states that this mystery game has been in the works for two years and that it'll be a smaller-scale production than a Battlefront entry or Fallen Order sequel - more on a level with 2020's well-received Star Wars: Squadrons (our review, here). The game is - again, apparently, as none of this is verified - being developed on Unreal Engine 4 and will release for all major platforms except Switch in late 2021.

Motive Studios' Squadrons was really only a modest success for EA, as evidenced by its lack of post-release support or additional content, so it's interesting to see that a comparably 'small' Star Wars game might be in the works. Naturally, until we get word from EA on this, or see a trailer, it's all firmly filed under the 'Rumours' category. But... sure? Who isn't up for more Star Wars, right now?

The Reddit user didn't specify which studio at EA is behind this new game, but they did add, "not Respawn". Which is a no-brainer, really, given that we know Respawn are working on the Jedi: Fallen Order sequel, among other things. IDK about you, but it does seem that you don't need to know a lot to be in the leaking game, huh? Here's one, for free: this Star Wars game will feature locations you've previously seen in the franchise. Imagine! What a scoop!

Water is wet, Jawas are small, Star Wars games will keep on coming out and nothing any of us can do will stop them. They are, inevitable. In related content, reminder that we didn't massively rate Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (6/10 review, here). Well, I didn't - others on the team love it and think all kinds of Dark Side thoughts about me now, as a result. Also, you should absolutely read our feature on how Star Wars: First Assault so nearly happened, before it didn't.
