Rust, the punishingly extreme multiplayer survival title from Facepunch Studios, is on its way to consoles at long last.

Development of this version of the game was handed over to Double Eleven, a studio based in the United Kingdom which has also worked on LittleBigPlanet, Limbo, Goat Simulator, Lego Harry Potter, and Minecraft Dungeons. In short, you'll likely never be doing the same thing twice at the studio. The console version teaser trailer revealed what the game will be like on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, though we admit we had gotten a sneak peek courtesy of a leaker who was part of the console version's closed beta testing period. It might even be the case that crossplay between all three platforms is available, which would open up opportunities for more mayhem from more scallywags eking out an existence in the wilderness.

The launch date for the console version of Rust is not stated at the moment, and the only inclination of when PlayStation and Xbox players will be able to jump into the chaos is "spring." The console version was in fact delayed from 2020 into 2021 owing to the upheaval caused by the pandemic, and so it's likely that the team is throwing caution to the wind should anything arise while working remotely. Still, the game was rated for these platforms in January, which seems to suggest that things are progressing smoothly and that we might get our mitts on this version of the game next month. Ah, because April is a relatively quiet month for launches, isn't it? (Narrator: it is not.)

Though Rust entered early access in 2013, it's been slowly but surely improved over the years, and it's actually enjoyed a recent revival thanks to the attention of popular streamers. Tune into a show from jacksepticeye, Corpse Husband, Shroud, Valkyrae, xQc, or Posty and you're bound to find them drenched in blood and scarpering off into the hills (in Rust). Facepunch Studios has also introduced a softcore mode which is targeted towards newer or casual players, so if you're a console player who's been curious about the game, this is a great place to start.
