The times are changing, and so must Superman. This is to be expected, of course. The Man Of Steel has been around since 1938, and the world has changed a lot in that time.

In the last few decades our hero has died (a handful of times), changed costumes, grown a mullet, had a family, and even quit his job as a journalist to start a blog. Now, DC Comics has announced another substantial change to the superhero, although this is definitely one for the better.

Fans will know that Superman has long stood for "truth, justice, and the American way". Clark Kent values all lives of course, being an immigrant from outer space, but the motto originated during the Superman radio serials of the 1940s, and has stuck ever since. In fairness, it's not a catchphrase he utters quite as much these days - which is probably why DC has announced it's changing.

Over the weekend, DC Chief Creative Officer and Publisher Jim Lee revealed during DC FanDome that our hero's new mission statement will be "truth, justice, and a better tomorrow". Only a curmudgeon of the highest order could find fault with that, frankly.

This welcome news comes just days after the reveal that the new Superman, Clark's son Jon Kent, is bisexual. The young hero came out in the most recent issue of Superman: Son Of Kal-El, marking a huge moment in comic book history.

"I've always said everyone needs heroes and everyone deserves to see themselves in their heroes and I'm very grateful DC and Warner Bros. share this idea," writer Tom Taylor said in a statement. "Superman's symbol has always stood for hope, for truth and for justice. Today, that symbol represents something more. Today, more people can see themselves in the most powerful superhero in comics."
