A Monster Hunter movie teaser trailer has dropped, and it's got mega Transformers vibes.
Lieutenant Artemis, played by Milla Jovovich, is out on a mission with her unit in an endless desert. They stumble upon what seems to be the giant skeleton of an unknown animal, and then the sand is churned up by an extremely fast and extremely large underground creature tracking their movements. A Black Diablos emerges from the ground with an almighty roar, and Artemis and her soldiers start shooting. Guns don't exist in Monster Hunter, but if they did, the team should have brought a water pistol.
This whole scene reminds me of the one in Transformers, where the soldiers are trapped in the desert and stalked by the Scorponok. I only know what that is called because I looked it up on Wikipedia. If this trailer alone isn't lighting a fire under you right now, the actual premise of the film does sound intriguing. Artemis and her unit suddenly find themselves in the world of Monster Hunter after a strange sandstorm (hence the big ol' desert in the trailer).

Their weapons are useless against these dangerous and ferocious animals, so it seems like the team are toast. "In their desperate battle for survival, the unit encounters the mysterious Hunter (Tony Jaa), whose unique skills allow him to stay one step ahead of the powerful creatures," reads the description from Sony Pictures Entertainment.
"As Artemis and Hunter slowly build trust, she discovers that he is part of a team led by the Admiral (Ron Perlman). Facing a danger so great it could threaten to destroy their world, the brave warriors combine their unique abilities to band together for the ultimate showdown," continues the summary. Paul W. S. Anderson, the guy who wrote all of the Resident Evil movies, is directing the adaptation, and he's a fan of the games.
In the past, he's praised Capcom for the "incredibly beautiful, immersive world they've created" in the Monster Hunter series, and so the movie will have little nods to the games. For example, all of the armour and weapons the Hunters wear and use in the movie will be based on the equipment from the games, and there will be a character who wears mis-matched armour, reflecting a player's ability to mix armour sets for gameplay advantages.

One thing that did raise my eyebrow with regards to this movie, is that it's apparently going to be released only in theatres in December. In my opinion, that's an optimistic outlook, especially after Cineworld recently announced that it is temporarily closing its UK and U.S. venues. Look, Mr. Anderson, I'm sure the movie is grand. But, I don't want to catch coronavirus and have to explain to the doctor that it's because I saw Monster Hunter. There's no such thing as bad publicity... unless there's a pandemic on. Think about it.
