The Mystery Of Brazil's Amazing Pokémon Statues Still Isn't Fully Solved

Three years later, and the artist remains anonymous

Because the internet rarely forgets something that was popular in the past, when it comes to gaining social media shares in the present, a fresh post on Twitter has reminded us all of the curious incident of Pokémon statues showing up in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo. Specifically, these statues appeared as if from nowhere in the municipality of Suzano, cheering up the locals no end.

As posts of the time make clear, this strange occurrence took place in March 2018. The theory then was that the statues had something to do with Pokémon GO - and yep, the appearances did coincide with each critter's community day. But as for who was behind these statues, "an anonymous group" was as far as anyone really got in 2018.

Watch our mini-doc on the Pokémon Trading Card Game, below...

In 2020, the statues popped up again on Twitter, earning plenty of shares and likes - "Kudos for the unknown artist who made such awesome statues," indeed. This time, the culprit/hero was said to be a local card game store owner - but I haven't been able to find a name or anything, beyond that. What I have done is located a card shop in the local area (possibly the card shop), and messaged them so... We'll see if anything comes of that.

The latest republishing of these cool little tributes to Pokémon came from Greengo Dictionary - "Brazilian culture in English," is its bio info - and as you can see, with over 13,000 likes, people clearly still love these statues.

Of course, it could well be that the artist behind these amazing statues wishes to remain anonymous. You'd have thought, if not, they'd have come forward to enjoy the acclaim they're so clearly due. Either way, these are really cool - whether or not you're seeing them for the first time.

In related Pokémon news, the next all-new game to come to Nintendo Switch, Legends: Arceus, now has a release date; and Pikachu is more recognisable than both Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden. Obviously.
