The 'Uncharted' Movie Has Been Delayed, No Longer Coming This Summer

The movie has been in the works since 2008.

Sony Pictures has pushed back the premiere of a number of its upcoming movies owing to the coronavirus crisis, and that includes Uncharted.

Poor old Uncharted. The movie itself has been in development since 2008, and has been passed from director to director and screenwriter to screenwriter. David O. Russell, Neil Burger, Seth Gordon, Shawn Levy, Dan Trachtenberg, and Travis Knight were all at one point attached to Uncharted, and eventually, Ruben Fleischer stepped up to the plate. Known for Zombieland, Zombieland: Double Tap, Gangster Squad, and Venom, he had the chops to create exhilarating action sequences as well as maintain the lighthearted tone and humour of the games, and in 2020, things looked like they were finally turning around for Uncharted.

Bar a brief pause in March, as the cast and crew needed to postpone production due to the spread of the coronavirus in Europe, filming had wrapped only six months afterwards. The cast is very excited to revel in their work on the movie, with Tom Holland playing the young protagonist and Mark Wahlberg in the role of his mentor, Sully. Antonio Banderas, Sophia Taylor Ali, and Tati Gabrielle accompany them as supporting characters, and my money's on Banderas being the baddie treasure hunter who chases Drake and Sully to discover the riches before they do. Sophia Taylor Ali, who is well-known for playing Dr. Dahlia Qadri in Grey's Anatomy, will be Chloe Frazer, whereas Gabrielle's character is currently unrevealed.

Yet, it appears that the impact of the pandemic on the entertainment industries has once again struck, and Uncharted wasn't able to dive and roll its way out of this one. Sony Pictures broke the news earlier today, and the updated premieres for the movies are:

  • Uncharted - February 11, 2022
  • Ghostbusters: Afterlife - November 11, 2021
  • Cinderella - July 16, 2021
  • Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway - June 11, 2021

Yikes. That's a while away, but if it ensures that cinema-goers stay safe while the virus is still a fact of life, then personally, I'm not too distraught. Fortunately, we do have a collection of photos from the set of Uncharted to tide us over til next year. Now, I'm not a historian, so take these musings with a pinch of salt. Featured in the photos are a book about the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, a bejewelled crucifix that looks like it could be a key, and rusty cells and ginormous chests of (what I hope is) gold. In 1519, Magellan embarked on his voyage to South America, but shortly after arriving in Argentina, he dealt with a mutiny. Could these captains who rebelled have had inside knowledge of a tomb of treasure, hidden somewhere along the coast? We'll have to wait to find out.
