Touching 'The Witcher 3' Scene Has Yennefer Call Ciri "Daughter", But Only In The Polish Version

Touching 'The Witcher 3' Scene Has Yennefer Call Ciri "Daughter", But Only In The Polish Version

Why they cut this, I don't know

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an epic, sprawling game - but it's also one filled with wonderfully tender moments between beautifully realised characters. I may have started the game to slay monsters and play Gwent, but I finished it out of love for Ciri, Yennefer, Triss, and the other friends I made along the way.

There are so many incredible moments during The Witcher 3's story I could mention, but there's one in particular I've always really loved. After Geralt finally stops dicking around with sidequests and finds Ciri, he brings her back to Kaer Morhen to prepare for battle with the Wild Hunt. The stakes are high, but Ciri's homecoming is a moment of pure joy as she's greeted by old friends and family.

Take a look at our tour of the Skellige isles below!

The usually stoic Yennefer in particular shares a touching moment with Ciri. The sorceress embraces her old charge and exclaims that she's "grown beautiful". It's moving stuff - but it turns out it's actually a hell of a lot more moving if you watch the cutscene in Polish.

A post currently doing the rounds on The Witcher subreddit explains that in the Polish language version of The Witcher 3, Yennefer greets Ciri with "Córeczko", which means "daughter". You can see the moment in question for yourself right here.

Curiously, this small but massively relevant piece of dialogue was removed from all other 16 languages, and many fans feel robbed as a result. It's not hard to see why.

Geralt and Yennefer might not be Ciri's actual parents, but they love her, and practically raised her. It's clear both of them see Ciri as a daughter, so to remove a moment in which Yennefer literally acknowledges that feels like an odd move. Granted, a lot of this backstory comes from the original novels, but the game still makes repeated references to the fact that Yennefer cares for Ciri.

Next time I play The Witcher 3, it might just have to be in Polish.
