Tik Tok Video Claims To Translate Groot's Dialogue, ‘Avengers’ Director Responds

I think they’re barking up the wrong tree.

Groot, the adorable and anarchistic tree-like alien from Guardians of the Galaxy, communicates in a language that the audience aren't able to understand beyond the iconic, "I am Groot." However, this TikTok user says that they've translated the lines from the films, and director James Gunn has weighed in on their work.

So, the reason why Groot only says "I am Groot" isn't owing to a low level of intelligence. He's equivalent to the average human, which I suppose, in the grand scheme of the expansive and diverse Milky Way galaxy, is probably not that clever. Anyway, his physiology means that his voice box is stiff and inflexible and therefore unable to create a variety of sounds outside of "I am Groot." But, Guardians of the Galaxy writer and director James Gunn has stated that the scripts do show the character's actual lines and feelings in special versions that only actor Vin Diesel receives. As a result, Diesel adds his own inflection to the phrase to represent the happiness, anger, indifference, and so on of the actual sentence. What's more is that the actor performs his lines in multiple languages so that his voice is the voice of Groot.

But, of course, there is a curiosity over what Groot is actually saying, and this TikTok claims to have cracked the code on his strange form of communication. In various scenes from the Marvel movies, nerd.star has overlain their translations when the character speaks, and it turns out that he's apparently very moody as a teenager. The video is mostly on the money, according to Gunn, which is an awesome achievement for the fan. It is also confirmed again that Groot calls out to Rocket "Dad?" before he disappears following the Snap from Thanos' use of the Infinity Gauntlet.

"The others are close, good guesses, but not exact. Still good work!" said Gunn after sharing the TikTok to his Twitter account. He added that he did intend for Groot and Rocket to fly off the handle and curse like a couple of space sailors. "Might've been 'go f*ck yourself,'" said the director regarding Groot's moodiness in the second Guardians of the Galaxy movie. "Baby/kid Groot drops constant F-bombs. I do have a take where, after Groot says to Yondu "Welcome to the f*cking Guardians of the Galaxy," Rocket, as they're flying away, says 'F*ck this f*ck that every other word f*ck f*ck f*ck." Well, those who swear often are apparently stronger, more honest, and more fluent in language. Your mileage may vary if you're a sentient tree-like organism, though.
