Get ready to watch your closest friends turn into bitter enemies all over again, because Worms is finally coming back to test your relationships to breaking point.

Team17 is bringing back its cherished, unique brand of wriggly warfare, and it sounds like there are some big changes coming to the much-loved franchise.

Team17 announced the new game alongside a nostalgic teaser trailer on Twitter. While the video doesn't give much away in terms of gameplay or... well, anything really, it's exciting to take a violent stroll down Worms memory lane. The tweet also claims that the franchise is back in a way we've never seen before, promising "new Worms, new ways to play". We can probably assume that we'll be seeing some adjustments to the age-old formula, then.

Hopefully not too many changes though, eh? I mean, we love Worms because of it's devilishly simple turn-based combat and cartoonish arsenal of bombastic weapons. As long as we're keeping that basic premise, I'm all for Team17 trying out new modes, adding more weapons, and maybe even throwing in some sort of campaign.

While the fundamental Worms experience hasn't really changed that much over the years, there have been a few shake-ups to the formula. In 2003 the franchise briefly abandoned its 2D roots in favour of full 3D environments. I'm told this was a fairly divisive move for the franchise, but as a young kid playing Worms 3D for the first time... I quite liked it? I certainly wouldn't be against another full 3D game, anyway.

The last game in the series, 2016's Worms W.M.D, was well-received enough. A return to its 2D roots, it was a familiar enough title, while adding in new features like vehicles, which were a nice, fun touch. I'm not entirely sure how much you can really change Worms before it stops being Worms, but I'm excited to see what manner of whimsical invertebrate action Team17 has in store for us.

While we don't know what platforms the new game is coming to, we do know that it's expected to drop this year. I imagine we'll be seeing it on current-gen consoles, but there's always a chance it could be cross-gen at this point. According to the studio, so we should expect to learn more about it soon.
