Gears of War fans are eating good. It may have been a few years since the release of the last main instalment in the series, but it was recently announced that not only is Netflix teaming up with developers The Coalition on a Gears of War movie, but an “adult animated series” is also in the works. What’s more, there’s “potential for more stories to follow”. What a win.
Talk online has immediately shifted to potential casting choices, and as reported by GamesRadar+, the designer of the first Gears of War game, Cliff Bleszinski, has been sharing what actors he’d like to see in various roles. As well as someone he doesn’t want to come anywhere near the franchise.

First of all, he agrees with the popular opinion that Dave Bautista would make a brilliant Marcus Fenix: “Oh and yes, Bautista as Marcus please - and a Latino actor for Dom, dammit,” he tweeted. He also offered an alternative option: “I could also see Karl Urban as Marcus, folks. F**kin’ diabolical.”

However, he had one main point to make: “Oh and keep Chris Pratt away from the Gears franchise, please, FFS.” Given the recent controversy surrounding Pratt voicing Mario in The Super Mario Bros. Movie…yeah, you can understand why he might feel this way.
It’s worth bearing in mind however that as influential as Bleszinski has been on the game series, he doesn’t appear to have had any say in the Netflix adaptations up to this point. In a statement celebrating the franchise’s 16th anniversary, he wrote: “No, no one has reached out to me to consult on any of the recent games or the Netflix stuff. If they do, cool, but if not, no hard feelings.”
