So, the trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie finally dropped last week, and believe it or not, it does genuinely look very, very good. It’s fair to say that some fans were concerned what Illumination, the studio that inflicted the Minions upon us, would do to our beloved plumber, but it looks undeniably gorgeous.
That said, there’s still some controversy over the voice acting - specifically, that of Mario himself. Fans were baffled when it was announced that Chris Pratt, of all people, would be donning the red cap and moustache, and, well, it turns out his Mario voice is stunningly similar to his normal speaking voice. I’m not sure what we expected.

Anyway, as reported by VGC, prominent voice actor Tara Strong, known for voicing a whole host of iconic roles such as Harley Quinn, Bubbles from The Powerpuff Girls, and My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic’s Twilight Sparkle, spoke up in support of Mario’s original voice actor, Charles Martinet, as she believes that he should have been given the starring role in the movie. She tweeted a picture of the two stood together after the trailer was aired, with the caption: “It should be Charles.”
She later posted expressing her frustration that full-time voice actors are often overlooked when it comes to animated films: “Voice actors- I’m gonna put my heart & soul in this for at least 20 years, help sell billions in merch, make the studios millions of dollars [and] make generations around the world happy. Hollywood- We don’t care.”

The following day, she rallied fans together to support Martinet, adding that she loves him so much that the two “insist on being next to each other at all cons”. He replied, saying: “I love you Tara! Thank you so much! Thank you everybody! Your love and kindness mean more than you could ever know, and genuinely touched my heart. My little eyes seem to be leaking today… with tender affection. Thank you.” Awww.
