The Super Mario Bros. Movie has been out for a full week now, and it’s already proven to be a huge success.
When the film’s review embargo first lifted and negative critic ratings began to flood Rotten Tomatoes, it wasn’t looking too good for Illumination’s colourful animated take on Nintendo’s most famous franchise. However, fans have been way more positive - as well as a 96% audience score, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has also smashed records to have the best ever worldwide opening for an animated film. Take that, Frozen II.

Anyone who’s seen the film will know what an incredible job all the voice actors did with bringing their characters to life, and Jack Black arguably surpassed expectations with his role as Bowser. Right from the first trailer, Black won over fans with his perfect portrayal of Mario’s nemesis, and things only got better in the actual movie when it was revealed that Bowser’s true intentions were to marry his true love, Princess Peach.
During the film, Bowser bursts into song, and performs a ballad about his unrequited love for Peach. Titled ‘Peaches’, the song (which was co-written by Black, Aaron Horvath, Michael Jelenic, Eric Osmond and John Spiker) has got millions of views on YouTube already. What’s more, Variety reports that it’ll be eligible to be nominated for the best original song at the Oscars, and now we absolutely need that to happen.

At GAMINGbible, we loved The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and especially Black’s portrayal of Bowser. In our review, I wrote: “There was never any doubt that Jack Black is the perfect person to play Bowser, and seeing (or rather, hearing) him in action proves this once and for all. While he totally nails the serious villainous scenes, he also uncovers a goofier side to Mario’s arch nemesis that’s hilarious to watch, and doesn’t feel at all out of place.”
