This year just got even better for fighting game fans. If Street Fighter 6 wasn’t enough for you, it’s just been announced that Mortal Kombat 12 is on the way.
So, where did that come from? It’s certainly been announced in a more subtle way than Street Fighter 6 was. Capcom's upcoming fighting game was revealed with an exciting teaser trailer last February, from which the main conclusions fans drew were, firstly, ‘that logo is awful’, and secondly, ‘Ryu is seriously packing’. I wish I was joking.

With that chaos in mind, maybe it’s for the best that Mortal Kombat 12’s announcement was such a quiet affair. As IGN reports, the title was unveiled during Warner Bros. Discovery’s earnings call yesterday (23 February), by executive vice president of global investor strategy, Andrew Slabin.

“There's lots more to come, including the highly-anticipated Mortal Kombat 12 and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, games also set for release this year with ambitious launch projections,” he said.
That's right, not only has it just randomly been announced, but we also have a release window of 2023. Admittedly, that doesn’t mean that it’s right around the corner - we’re still only in February. Even so, it’s currently set to come out within the next 10 months, which is a thrilling prospect.
Early last year, it seemed as though Mortal Kombat 12 may have been leaked by a NetherRealm employee, thanks to a photo of a desk full of Mortal Kombat imagery. The photo showed a folder on a screen named “MK12_Mast”, and next to this, a message could be seen from another employee, warning staff to be careful of leaking information about the next game. Many believed that this seemed far too convenient to be anything but intentional, and so a real announcement seemed inevitable.

Lo and behold, it finally happened. We’ve still not seen an actual trailer, though, but it’s surely only a matter of time.
