Netflix's record-breaking new show has already beaten Stranger Things

Back in June, Stranger Things officially broke Netflix’s viewership records, and were we surprised? Nope. Stranger Things is a pop culture phenomenon and season four was bigger in every way, from its lengthy runtime to the whopping $30 million per episode budget.

The release of season four saw Stranger Things break the English language record for hours watched after 286.79 million hours were viewed during the TV series’ first week on the streaming platform, sending the show to the number one spot in 83 countries. Well, that record has now been beaten and what’s hugely impressive is that it’s been broken by a new show - Wednesday.

That’s right. The brand new The Addams Family inspired Wednesday has outperformed Stranger Things. The eight-episode first season has already racked up 341.2 million hours watched during its first week on the streamer which, as Netflix confirmed, means it now holds the record for the most hours viewed in a week for an English language TV series.

Announcing the feat, Netflix said, “Being an outcast has never been more in as Wednesday, the supernatural infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams' years at Nevermore Academy, debuted in the #1 spot with a record-breaking 341.2M hours viewed.” (Thanks IGN).

“The series now holds the record for the most hours viewed in a week for an English-language TV series on Netflix,” Netflix continued. “Starring Jenna Ortega as Wednesday with an impressive cast of characters and directed and executive produced by Tim Burton, with showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar, the series was #1 in 83 countries - tied with Stranger Things 4.” Will Stranger Things 5 retake the title?
