Xbox Game Studios boss says new Fable is a 'modern take’

Matt Booty has reassured fans that Fable is in safe hands with Forza Horizon devs, Playground Games.

It’s been a long time since the last proper Fable game was released, but hopefully, not for too much longer. Back in 2020, it was announced that a new title is in the works, which will serve as a reboot of the series.

Slightly controversially though, it was confirmed that the team producing this highly-anticipated instalment is Playground Games - the team behind the Forza Horizon games. Many fans have expressed their concern that a group so heavily focused on racing games won't be able to pull off an action-RPG with the same flair as the original devs.

Take a look at the trailer for Fable below.

As reported by TheMix.net, the head of Xbox Game Studios, Matt Booty, has reassured fans that they have nothing to worry about. In an interview featured in Skill Up’s Friends Per Second podcast, he explained that while Playground Games does make racing games, the team’s main qualities are attention to detail and quality, first and foremost.

“They had a particular passion for the IP, and I think they also demonstrated that they understand what the heart and soul of Fable is about, and how they can bring it forward for today’s sensibilities and, just, you know, make a modern take on Fable,” he said. “There’s stuff that I wish I could share and show, because some of the things that I’ve seen are just so encouraging.

“There’s a danger sometimes - you don’t want to give… you know, the RPG team to go make a racing game or vice-versa. You don’t want the shooter team to go try to make a kids’ building block game, I mean you can get in trouble there,” he continued. “But they’ve got a great technology base, they’ve got a passion for the IP, and they’ve just got such a demonstrated commitment to craft and quality.”

Booty admitted that, at first, he was also dubious: “I think the team would share that during some of the first reviews I shared a little skepticism. The ‘look, I feel like we’re kinda going out on a limb here to do this’,” he said. “But they’ve since put that to rest, and I’m excited for everybody to see it when we are ready to show stuff.”

Fable doesn’t currently have a release window, but will be coming to PC and Xbox Series consoles at some point in the future.
