New PlayStation 5 Rumoured To Have An Interesting Feature

Sony are rumoured to be launching a new PlayStation 5 console next year which'll include a major new feature.

PlayStation 5s are still a little tricky to get your hands on if you just want the base console, but if you’re happy to grab a bundle, you should be able to snap up Sony’s new-gen console pretty easily. I say that, of course there’s the hefty price tag. Despite that, PlayStation are ramping up their efforts when it comes to new products. A lighter PS5 has appeared on the market and the company will soon release the DualSense Edge controller. On top of this, there could be an even newer PS5 model on the way featuring a very interesting feature.

Speaking of the DualSense Edge, check out the pro controller’s features in the trailer below.

According to Insider Gaming, Sony will soon release a new PS5 model featuring a detachable disc drive which could launch in September 2023. It’s believed that the console will replace the current launch-model PS5s. The updated model is said to share the same hardware as current consoles - the detachable disc drive is the only noticeable difference.

The disc drive would attach to the main body of the console via an extra USB-C port located on the back. Insider Gaming reported that the disc drive would be available to buy as a bundle with the main console, in addition to being sold on its own.

The site wrote: "Although the new detachable disc drive is portable, it will not ruin the aesthetics of the console and will attach to it without looking external, presumably meaning the new PlayStation 5 will look similar to the existing model." I suppose this way, Sony only has to manufacture one style of base console, as opposed to the current disc and digital-only versions. It’ll be interesting to see what this looks like in practice.
