New 'Lightyear' Trailer Introduces An Incredible New Character

The trailer has introduces us to Buzz's robot cat, who we're immediately in love with

A brand new trailer for Lightyear has just dropped, and it looks unbelievably good. The movie promises to deliver the origin story of Buzz Lightyear, and by that, they mean the guy from within the Pixar universe who inspired the toy - not the toy himself. Makes sense.

Perhaps most notably, this trailer has introduced us to Buzz’s new robot cat companion, Socks. I frankly couldn’t tell you how this lil guy fits into the Pixar/Toy Story lore, but no doubt he will somehow. Either way, he’s a cute robot cat, everyone is going to love him, and you know he’s going to get so much merch. That’s all that really matters. Either way, check out the trailer below…

Buzz is being voiced by Chris Evans, which might seem totally wrong to fans of the original Toy Story series, but again, we’re not really looking at the same character we already knew and loved. Just to make things more complicated, he’s not actually meant to be a real astronaut even in this movie - he’s still a fictional character, within the Pixar universe. It makes more sense if you imagine this very movie releasing, as a fictional, animated film, within the world of Toy Story. My head hurts.

If you can wrap your head around that, though, it certainly helps clear up the fact that aliens (as well as Emperor Zurg, by the look of things) exist in the film - it’d be kind of dark to think that Andy and his family were living under constant threat of alien invasion for the entire duration of the Toy Story movies. Though that could make for another very interesting spinoff, actually.

We got our first look at Lightyear in October last year, much to the hype of everyone on the internet. That said, seeing Buzz with actual hair is certainly a sight to behold, and in a really weird way. Anyway, the film is set to launch (haha) 17 June this year, so there’s not too long to wait now.
