Those of us desperately waiting for any further news on the sequel to The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild can look forward to a little something to tide us over in the meantime. Nintendo has announced Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity - a prequel set 100 years before the events of Breath Of The Wild. It's coming to Nintendo Switch on November 20th.
Developed by Koei Tecmo, Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity will see players take on the role of Link, Zelda, and the other four Champions as they engage in large-scale battles across Hyrule with Ganon's forces. If the title sounds familiar, it's because Hyrule Warriors is the name of a 2014 Zelda spinoff with a very similar premise. The difference this time, it seems, is that the events of Age Of Calamity are completely canonical in regards to the mainline Zelda series.
Take a look at the debut trailer below.
Combining the colourful art-style of Breath Of The Wild with the kind of devastating battles that the Nintendo Switch classic only ever hinted at in flashbacks is an inspired move. Although, as any of us who have played through Breath Of The Wild will know, there's very little chance that Age Of Calamity will have a happy ending for everyone involved.
Age Of Calamity gameplay looks to be similar to Hyrule Warriors and the rest of the Dynasty Warriors game from which these titles take their inspiration. Taking control of one of several main characters, you'll travel across the battlefield fighting grunts and capturing objectives. All the while, you'll be filling up a special meter to unleash devasting screen filling attacks, and running into the occasional boss battle.
The original Hyrule Warriors was great fun - if a little repetitive from time to time. I'm more than happy to pick up this sequel/prequel and dive back into the world of Breath Of The Wild, some 100 years before everything went pear-shaped.
