Pokémon Sword & Shield is the first full-blooded game in the series that's been made for a console you can plug into a television. Though, if you've been playing the game through a Roku smart TV then you may be better off sticking to treating it as a handheld game - users are reporting that the game is locking their television, making it impossible to play.
"We are aware of an issue when using Nintendo Switch and the latest Pokémon game impacting a limited number of Roku devices," Roku wrote in a statement on Reddit. "We are working diligently to resolve this issue."
The original thread had a user explaining what happened when they tried to play the game, saying "My Insignia Roku TV is stuck in a loop where it gets to the screen that says "Insignia Roku" and then turns off. It's on about a 10 second interval that it does it. I've removed all connected devices from it, attempted a reset, unplugged it for 10+ minutes, and even tried to factory reset the device and still no luck."
The user, TheBasedSloth, later updated their post with a solution they'd discovered for the problem: "I put the switch into airplane mode and now both are able to work at the same time. I have no clue why this works but it seems to fix it."
The thread is full of people suffering from the same issue, but it's not clear if the airplane mode workaround is solving the problem for everyone. It doesn't appear that the bug damages the televisions at all, so there's not much to worry about on that front. Though, until Roku rolls out a patch to swat this odd bug you should probably stick to handheld mode.
Oddly it appears this bug is limited strictly to Pokémon and not any other Switch game that connects to the internet.
