Assassin's Creed Red looks set to be unplayable for a huge chunk of gamers

Assassin’s Creed Red is due to release sometime this year, 2024, though not everybody will get the chance to play it.

The next Assassin’s Creed game will mark a few “firsts” for Ubisoft’s flagship franchise. For starters it’ll transport the series to Feudal Japan, a time period it’s never explored before but is a no brainer for a game about stealth and fluid movements.

Players will reportedly play as two protagonists, a man and a woman, including one based on a real-life historical figure. One will be a shinobi, which is the proper name for a ninja, and the other will be a samurai, which fits nicely with the games RPG gameplay. It was believed Assassin’s Creed Mirage would mark a return to the series’ roots of more linear stealth gameplay, and while this will be the case for several future games, the RPG style introduced during Assassin’s Creed Origins will be sticking around too.

Unfortunately another first for the franchise is Assassin’s Creed Red is reportedly being built for new-gen consoles.

Players on high-end PCs, the Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 will be able to play it, but if you’re still on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 I’m afraid you’ll have to upgrade.

It was inevitable really, especially since modern Assassin’s Creed games constantly push the boundary for large open worlds. The bigger or more detailed the world, the more power the console needs, so it only makes sense to leave the weaker platforms behind.

As for a release date, Ubisoft is yet to share official news. The developer hasn’t even shared gameplay yet so it’s likely we’ll see a gameplay trailer accompanied by a release window later this year.

Assassin’s Creed Red is arguably one of the most exciting projects in years, as Japan has been a highly-requested location for the series ever since it started globetrotting. Hopefully it’s worth the cost of upgrading to a new-gen platform though.
