Bionicile demo proves fans are incredibly creative and passionate

A fan-made Bionicle game is here, courtesy of a demo trailer that’s sure to get gamers hungry for more.

Posted on 10 August, the developers behind the game, Team Kanohi, wowed us with a teaser of the demo for the upcoming Steam release, and what we can expect once it goes live. Currently, the only details we have regarding when the demo will drop is that it’s “set to release early next year”. If you take into account how long it’s taking for the demo to launch, it’s likely we’ve got a long, hard slog ahead of us before we see the full game.

How gorgeous is this Bionicle: Masks of Power demo?!

But from what we’ve seen in the trailer, the wait will definitely be worth it. Created using Unreal Engine 5, Bionicle: Masks of Power is a powerful homage to the memories the developers fondly have of Bionicle when it initially launched in 2001.

Influenced by the original video game that later came out in 2003, this lovingly created game will help you relive the legends of the Toa while you brave the dangers of Mata Nui. As the devs themselves said, it’s an “ambitious fan project”. But that ambition is clearly paying off, as those who’ve already seen the demo trailer are praising Team Kanohi's dedication to Bionicle and its lore.

“They had no right to go this hard, literal goosebumps,” said Drunkege on YouTube, while another post read “Dude every aspect of this just hit so hard. The music, the character intros, the red star, the gameplay. Looks amazing, and hit me with a nostalgia wave.”

As the devs continue to give their all for the game, they’re “remaking childhoods” as they go, helping to bring back to life a franchise that shouldn’t have been discounted in the first place. Will Bionicle: Masks of Power rewrite the wrongs of that decision? Only time will tell. But for now, the outlook is positive.

You can watch the Bionicle: Masks of Power demo trailer on Steam and YouTube, with the demo launching early next year.
