Mass Effect meets Fallout in stunning new sci-fi horror RPG

This mind-bending RPG is like if Mass Effect and Fallout had a baby, and I don’t think we’re ready for it.

During the Xbox Partner Showcase earlier this week fans were treated to a few glimpses at third-party games coming to the Xbox Series X/S and PC. While the announcement that Persona 3: Reload would be getting an expansion pass was the news I was most hyped for, I couldn’t help but have my eyes drawn to a new IP called The Alters.

Check out The Alters below

In case you missed it, The Alters is an upcoming sci-fi horror that poses a question we all ask ourselves from time to time, “what if?..” In the game, players will become Jan Dolski, who’s trapped on a desolate planet that allows him to create copies of himself through an unknown power.

Aesthetically and story-wise it’s very Mass Effect, with elements of Fallout and Starfield thrown in for good measure. The Jan-copies you’ll meet, also known as his alters, are versions of himself that made different decisions in their lifetimes, like rebuilding a broken marriage, where they started to work and so on. Each Alter has their own personality fashioned by the choices they made, so the aim of the game is to talk with them in the hopes they have some knowledge or wisdom to help you get out of trouble, if you can convince them to help.

It’s a unique concept to say the least, and it’ll probably have a lot of people scratching their heads when it releases but it’s great to see a game boast such creativity in its gameplay and story.

The Alters will release sometime later this year, though an exact release date wasn’t ready during the Xbox Partner Showcase. It’ll launch on Xbox Series X/S, PC and PlayStation 5.
