New James Bond 007 game officially announced

We’re in the midst of a Bond hiatus but worry not, my friends. A new James Bond game is on the way, but it’s not the IO Interactive release if that’s the kind of update you were hoping for.

Daniel Craig’s tenure as James Bond drew to a close back in 2021 with the release of No Time To Die which means, naturally, the internet is rife with rumours as to who will take over the role next. Idris Elba’s name has been thrown around a lot - although he doesn’t seem overly keen on the idea - as has Aaron Taylor Johnson’s. Given the current Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) strikes, what I’d imagine is a long casting process is going to be even more drawn out so in the meantime, we turn to video games. IO Interactive are still keeping hush-hush about their upcoming AAA Bond release, but a new mobile game has arrived from studio TiltingPoint, Cypher 007.

Cypher 007 is a brand new mobile game that’s set to release on Apple Arcade on 29 September. Sure, it’s not the AAA release you were hoping for, but one of those is still on the way - where you’ll be able to play as the ‘original’ Bond. Cypher 007 sees players enjoy recognisable Bond scenes from a top-down perspective. You’ll have to face off against Spectre and a couple of familiar villainous faces.

As reported by IGN, the synopsis reads, “Players will be immersed in this beloved universe of espionage as they gather intel, uncover secrets, and use spycraft to overcome immersive levels filled with obstacles, opponents, and objectives that increase in difficulty as they progress. Players will complete missions to bring down Blofeld and Spectre once and for all, and compete against other 007 agents around the world via leaderboards to prove they're the best spy of all time."

I’ll admit, it looks pretty fun. As mentioned, the game is set to release on Apple Arcade on 29 September. There’s no word on whether it’s scheduled to come to any further platforms at a later date.
