Thanks to the modding community, there’s no end of options to choose from when it comes to expanding Skyrim’s gameplay and lore. New dungeons, caves, and enemies can be found across multiple mods.

This free download builds on the foundations of the original ‘Survival Mode’ and adds a few necessary tweaks; as the modder who created it explains, it’s “been rebuilt from the ground up”.
Not only does it improve on Bethesda’s “much slower scripting language”, this NexusMods download also alters three key areas: cold, hunger, and fatigue. A greater “emphasis” is put onto these conditions to give a more authentic scramble for survival.
Before you install this new experience, the creator makes it absolutely clear that you’ll need to start a new save – they write it in big, yellow letters across the page several times. We appreciate you’re all bonded with your characters, but needs must.
Fans who’ve braved this mod already have commented on how “great” it is, so if you want to spice up the experience, and potentially perish to the elements before meeting any enemies, this mod is for you.

If you want a vanilla playthrough, there’s always tricks and tips to be found in the base game, such as the inventory weight trick few of us know to us. It’s not quite as thrilling as trying to survive, but it'll make journeying through the game easier.
