Another Xbox console exclusive is officially coming to the PlayStation 4 and 5. Indie adventure Somerville is set to arrive on Sony’s consoles later this month.
It wouldn’t be the first Xbox exclusive to reach PlayStation so far this year. High On Life, the comedic first-person shooter from Squanch Games, was released on PlayStation 4 and 5 just a few short weeks ago on 22 July. Scorn, the survival horror game from Serbian studio Ebb Software, is also set to finally release on PlayStation later this year after landing on Windows PC and Xbox in October 2022. There’s no set release date for that one though just yet. Today, we’re here to talk about Somerville which will be released on the PS4/5 on 31 August.

Developed by Jumpship, a studio spearheaded by ex-Limbo and Inside developer Dino Patti, Somerville is an adventure video game that was released on Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on 15 November 2022. The studio’s debut title centres around a father who’s separated from his family during an alien invasion. It’s a third person game where the player must overcome platforming and physics-based puzzles.

Somerville is somewhat of a marmite game. It ended up with a Metascore of 71, garnering 15 positive reviews, 23 mixed, and two negative. VG247 gave the game a perfect 100, writing, “It’s affecting in all the right ways, and a game I really can’t recommend strongly enough.” Game Informer awarded a score of 80, saying, “Somerville is held back by technical shortcomings, but is full of impressive moments worth experiencing with the lights turned low and and your headphones up high. The father’s adventure lingers in my mind as I reflect on what happened, and those memories do ultimately outweigh the technical shortcomings.”
On the other hand, it did draw a 40 from PC Gamer who said, “Somerville never hits its stride, thanks to flat direction and frustrating mechanics.” If you ask me though, it’s a very enjoyable game that’s worth picking up when it lands on PlayStation on 31 August.
