God Of War Ragnarok: Valhalla free expansion announced

God Of War Ragnarok: Valhalla free expansion announced

God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla, a free DLC expansion, has been announced at The Game Awards.

Well, well, well - or should I say alright, alright, alright seeing as Matthew McConaughey has just left the stage. The Game Awards are underway.

We’ve got several hours ahead of us, full of reveals and awards. We’re less than 20 minutes in, but already we’ve been treated to some glorious news. Neil Newbon has won Best Performance for his role as Astarion in Baldur’s Gate 3, plus the aforementioned McConaughey stopped by the showcase to share that he’ll star in the upcoming game Exodus. PlayStation just arrived with the biggest reveal of the night so far though. God of War Ragnarök is finally getting DLC. Not just any DLC either. Free DLC that lands in just a couple of days.

Take a look at God of War Ragnarök Valhalla in action below.

That’s right. God of War Ragnarök Valhalla is a brand new free DLC that’s set to launch on 12 December 2023. Over on the PlayStation blog, Santa Monica devs announced that Ragnarök has now sold over an impressive 15 million units across PlayStation 4 and 5, with the upcoming Valhalla DLC being a thank you gift to fans.

Valhalla is an epilogue to the main game, following Kratos on a “deeply personal and reflective journey”. The synopsis reads: “Set after the decisive battle against Odin and Atreus’ departure, Kratos has seen a path for himself that he never thought possible before. Brought to the mysterious shores of Valhalla accompanied only by Mimir, Kratos will enter its unknown depths to overcome trials within himself and face echoes of his past.”

In a first for the series, the DLC will include roguelike elements. Devs tease, “During each attempt, you will learn and adapt to the challenges Valhalla has to offer. The more you overcome, the more resources you’ll gain that can be put towards permanent upgrades that affect both Kratos and even Valhalla itself.”

I’m going to hazard a guess that it’s going to take us quite a few attempts to discover Valhalla’s secrets. Kratos will have access to all of his weapons and skill tree, but players must commit to a shield and Spartan Rage path per each attempt. You’ll be able to upgrade certain stats throughout the mode. Well I for one cannot wait to jump in.
