According to Sony, PlayStation 5 sales are expected to decline next year due to a lack of first-party releases.
The PS5 officially has no games, at least next year anyway. 2024 has some pretty big releases on the horizon like Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Sonic X Shadow Generations, there’s just so much good stuff on the way it’s hard to keep track of them all.

Unfortunately 2025’s line-up is reportedly pretty barren when it comes to big new releases and according to Sony it’s expected the PS5 is going to struggle.

Sony president, COO and CFO Hirok Totoki recently spoke about the PS5’s 2025 fiscal year, saying “due to entering the latter half of the console cycle, we’re aiming to optimise sales with a greater emphasis on balance with profits. So we expect a gradual decline in unit sales from next fiscal year onwards.”
While this somewhat implies Sony is getting ready to move on to the next generation of hardware with the PlayStation 6, which will reportedly feature a controversial killer app, one of the main reasons the company is expecting a decrease in profits is a lack of games.
Totoki went on to say “Regarding first-party software, we aim to continue to focus on producing high-quality productions and producing live service games. But while major projects are currently under development, we do not plan to release any new major existing franchise titles next fiscal year like God of War: Ragnarok and Marvel Spider-Man 2.”
This will be disappointing news for fans, but you never know there might be a few surprises in store for 2025 and there’ll definitely be some good third-party games to occupy PlayStation fan’s time before the next major release.

That being said, a gradual slow down for the PlayStation 5 could be indicating the next generation is closer than we think.
