PlayStation 5 owners will need to buy a vertical stand for their new consoles, as the new model will no longer come with one.
Yesterday, Sony dropped a bombshell announcement, a new PlayStation 5 model that’s smaller, sleeker, and comes with an optional Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive to add-on to the new digital-only version.

The company shared all the details in its latest blog post, where it showed off some of the new features, as well as what it means for future PlayStation consoles going forward.

The power output is exactly the same, meaning the main improvement is its size and shape reduction. Sony has confirmed that it’s a full-on replacement for the previous models too, meaning once they’ve ran out of stock of the originals, these new models will be the only new PS5s sold.
However, there is a drawback. If you’re the type of person who prefers to stand their consoles vertically, this new PS5 might not be the one for you, as it only comes with a horizontal stand.
Previous PS5 models came with a stand that could be adjusted to stand your console vertically or horizontally, but if you want the new one to stand upright, you’ll have to pay for an entirely separate stand.
The new Vertical Stand will be sold separately for $29.99/£24.99, but will be compatible with all PlayStation 5 models. The new stand looks pretty good too, looking much smaller, whilst still providing stability for the console.

While you could stand a PlayStation 5 upright without securing it with a stand, it’s not recommended, especially if it’s positioned somewhere where it can be easily knocked over or bumped in to.
New console covers compatible with the new model will also be available soon, allowing you to customise its appearance with an all-matte black finish, or one of the latest Deep Earth Collection colours.
The new PlayStation 5s will be available to buy later this year.
