PlayStation Plus users are calling for big changes to Sony's subscription service after the latest batch of free games failed to impress.
It's no secret that the PlayStation Plus lineup will have its fair share detractors most months. After all, you can't please everyone! Even so, October's offerings for PlayStation 4 users - Mortal Kombat X and PGA Tour 2K21 - have been almost universally panned, with some fans going so far as to say they feel insulted by Sony this month.
"Ridiculous. This game is literally six years old," wrote one user of Mortal Kombat X. "Not only that, they gave us standard edition which is a bigger insult! The game is good, is just, they could have given the more complete edition of it."
"Pretty insulting to give us X and not XL when the game is so old and most people who like fighting games would have already bought it or Mortal Kombat 11 by now," said another, adding that "it could have been worse".
In light of these underwhelming free games, one user over on the PlayStation Plus subreddit has suggested a change to the way Sony handles the monthly lineup. coupsuper believes that subscribers should be able to vote on a selection of games, with the most popular two becoming part of the official monthly batch of freebies.
With over 1,000 upvotes it's currently one of the most popular posts on the subreddit. Although as others have pointed out, Sony did attempt to implement a voting system for PS Plus subscribers in the past, and it didn't end brilliantly.
Sony briefly introduced a "Vote To Play" option way back in 2015, but it ended up causing more problems than anything. For one thing fans who really wanted one of the games on offer would have to watch hopelessly as it lost the vote to a game they knew they didn't want, which I honestly think is worse than being surprised by a game like Mortal Kombat X or PGA 2K21 Golf Tour.
Besides that, there was the fact that the developers of these games were forced to watch while users voted - and sometimes actively campaigned - against projects they'd poured their heart and soul into. That can't be fun, can it? Let's maybe leave the voting system in the past and think of something else, shall we?
