For months now, there's been a fairly persistent rumour that Sony will be holding a special PlayStation Meeting in February. Back in August last year, an alleged leaked marketing email shared on NeoGaf and 4Chan made reference to an event planned for February 13th, 2020 that would showcase "the future of Sony PlayStation to the whole world".
The email went on to claim that a number of AAA publishers and developers, including Ubisoft and EA, had been invited to the event to show off their next-gen titles. It was also expected that Sony would be showing off a few PS5 exclusives. However, as we made clear at the time, the source of this email - a random post on 4Chan - was completely unverified. As a result, we advised against getting too excited, or marking February 13th in your calendars as the day you'd finally see the PlayStation 5 in all its glory.
However, a new source appears to have lent a crumb of validity to these previously-unverified reports. David Jaffe, who was an instrumental developer on hit PlayStation franchises God of War and Twisted Metal, has claimed that the long-rumoured PS5 reveal event is "less than four weeks away" - which would seemingly support February 13th as the correct date after all.
Whether Jaffe genuinely knows something we don't, or is simply basing his comments on the aforementioned rumour is unclear. As such, I'd still advise approaching this rumour with a healthy degree of scepticism. With that said, Jaffe does lend a little more credibility to the whole thing, doesn't he?

It's worth pointing out that Jaffe isn't "in" the industry in the way he used to be, since his independent studio, The Bartlet Jones Supernatural Detective Agency, shut down in 2018. Even so, he's still very much an active player in these parts thanks to regular online streams on his YouTube channel. There's every chance, then, that he's still close to former colleagues who remain at PlayStation. He could easily have gotten the inside scoop from any one of them.
We also need to consider the facts. We know Sony is skipping E3 for the second year in a row to focus on its own events. We also know that Microsoft has already unveiled the Xbox Series X, and plans to go big at E3 2020 to take advantage of PlayStation's absence (although the same was true in 2019, and you could argue that Microsoft didn't go nearly big enough, then).
Finally, we know that both next-gen consoles are launching at the end of this year, and we haven't seen anything of the PS5 yet, not really. Surely then, it makes sense that Sony would want to move on a reveal event sooner rather than later. Whether or not February is the month we'll be seeing that event remains to be seen, but we don't have long to wait until we find out.
