Revamped PS5 model releasing next year with unique new feature

This new model has a very curious new feature.

A recent report asserts that Sony is readying up to release a new PlayStation 5 model in tandem with an enormous stock drop in 2023. Given that the console already broke the record for the biggest hardware launch in the company's history, it looks like Sony's shooting for the stars and then some.

Insider Gaming states that Sony is aiming to sell 18 million PS5s before the end of this fiscal year, which works out to be an approximately 70% increase year-on-year. That's ambitious enough, however the source continues to claim that the company wants to ship 30.5 million PS5s throughout the 2023 fiscal year. Of these, 12 million units will be the standard version of the PS5.

The remainder of this total will be the new model. Pause for dramatic effect. This console will use "almost identical" hardware to the current model and feature a detachable disc drive according to the scoop. Not only is this an intriguing addition, the detachable disc drive will align with the aesthetics of the console and will enable customers to purchase a new disc drive separately should the original one break.

The disc drive will also connect using an extra USB-C port on the back of the product. It's sort of a smart choice, though I'm not totally convinced that the detachable disc drive is going to be the prettiest thing on your TV stand, compared to the imposing silhouette of the PS5.

It's theorised this model, with its detachable disc drive, will allow Sony to cut costs. While the PlayStation 5 has been a success, the impacts of the pandemic are likely to weigh on the company's future strategies. We'll have to hold tight and see what Sony's got up its sleeves.
