Sony aiming to ship 30 million PS5 consoles in 2023

Sony’s PlayStation 5 has seen a huge boost in availability in recent weeks. It’s still pretty hard to get your hands on a standalone console, but most retailers are now constantly stocking bundles - although, of course, these cost a pretty penny. Bottom line is, PlayStation 5s aren’t the rare beasts they once were.

Last month, Sony saw a 400% increase in their PlayStation 5 shipment volumes in the US. It’s assumed that a chunk of these will play into the upcoming release of God of War Ragnarök. Expect to see Kratos appear in plenty of bundles. It looks as if Sony’s ambitions are only set to increase though as the company hopes to ship over 30 million PlayStation 5 consoles in 2023.

A source has told Insider Gaming that Sony plans to ship 30.5 million PlayStation 5 consoles in the fiscal year 2023, which runs from March 2023 to March 2024. The report went on to claim that Sony aims to sell 18 million consoles by the end of this 2022 fiscal year, showing an almost 70% increase year on year.

Insider Gaming went on to add that 12 million of these 30.5 million PS5s will be the traditional release console. Production of this model is expected to cease by the end of 2023. If this has left you feeling a little confused, it’s believed that Sony will soon launch a brand new PlayStation 5 featuring a detachable disc drive.

This means that in essence, Sony only has to produce one type of console, whereas the disc and digital-only versions are currently two completely different consoles. With the new version, those who want a disc drive will simply have to also purchase the detachable drive which is thought to seamlessly fit onto the console. It’s a major overhaul considering the PS5 is still in its infancy, but the logic makes sense.
