The rumoured PS5 redesign has seemingly been confirmed by a new patent.
Rumours have been rife for quite some time now that Sony intends to one day release a revised version of the PlayStation 5 console. After all, ever since the original PlayStation launched in 1994, Sony has released at least one additional console variation for every generation, other than the PS5 at this point. So it should come as no surprise that Sony might have intentions to repeat history in this modern era - and it seems that time could be arriving in the near future.
As reported by Push Square, Sony Interactive Entertainment has filed a new patent for a detachable optical disk drive. This adds further foundation to similar reports that were circulating in December 2022. According to the patent, known as US-20230118186-A1_I, the optical disc drive “can be mounted in electronic equipment such as a game machine, personal computer, or audio-visual (AV) equipment”.

It’s worth keeping in mind that the PlayStation 5 isn't actually mentioned in the newly filed patent, however, it doesn't take much to put two and two together. Plus with all the previous rumours of Sony developing a PS5 Pro or Slim, as the old saying goes, 'there's no smoke without fire'.
Earlier this month, PS5 sales received a boost following improved stock at retailers, leaving many scalpers licking their wounds to cut losses. Let’s just hope that when a new PS5 console arrives, Sony doesn't repeat the same mistakes and stock will be plentiful.
In related news, rumours have been making the rounds that not only does Sony plan on releasing a revised PlayStation 5 console, but so too does Nintendo. What’s more, both console giants reportedly plan to release both new consoles at around the same time. If true, that would be very interesting, indeed.
