Earlier this week, we got some very bittersweet news, by way of an insider. If it’s to be believed, the good is pretty dang great - Rockstar are apparently putting all their focus on making GTA VI. I’m sure no one can complain about that - it’s quite easily one of the most hyped releases on the horizon (however far away it may be).
The trade-off is pretty severe, though. Reportedly, remasters of both GTA IV and Red Dead Redemption were planned to happen, but got scrapped in favour of making GTA VI the centre of Rockstar’s attention. At the time, Kotaku at least added some reassurance that the remasters won’t be “out of scope” forever - while they might still happen eventually, GTA VI has to get itself out there first. However, a new update to the leak has a far less hopeful outcome.

As reported by Dexerto, Tez2 (who first spoke about the scrapped remasters) also claims that new-gen versions of Red Dead Redemption 2 have been cancelled completely. Responding to a one gamer, who asked if “it’s safe to say that Red Dead Redemption 2 will never get a PS5/Xbox Series S/X release”, the leaker said: “Yes. I’ve heard about those a long time ago. As well as their plans to come up with an Enhanced Rockstar Editor. All cancelled/halted by now.”
Ouch. That may well be the last straw for Red Dead fans. Just this week, the poor Red Dead Online community began planning a funeral for the game, as it approaches its one year anniversary of no actual content updates. It’s taking place in the game on 13 July, by the way, for anyone who wants to take part.

Of all the cancelled projects though, Red Dead Redemption 2’s new-gen upgrade feels the most surprising - the original release sold a monstrous number of copies (over 43 million as of February), so not only is there demand, but we can all agree that those already gorgeous visuals given a little extra oomph would be glorious. Again though, as of now, this is all unofficial - do take it with a pinch of salt.
