Twitch Streamer Faces Backlash For Saying We Should "Shame" Obese People

Viewers have called out the streamer for her offensive comments

Twitch just really hasn’t been that great of a place lately, has it? Throughout the year, the platform has been boycotted due to racism, streamers have come forward talking about their negative experiences with viewers, and everyone is constantly getting banned, it seems.

Now, one streamer is facing backlash from viewers due to comments she made about obesity during her livestream on 15 December. Fanfan, a 21 year old streamer from Vancouver, was streaming in the Just Chatting category when she made the remarks.

Why not check out some of our favourite livestream wins and fails while you're here?

“When you go to a hotel, and they have a little roped-off area, for a smoking area, like the dedicated smoking area in airports, right? Why don’t they f*cking have that for obese people? I know they don’t have that for heroin users, but why do we not shame people who are morbidly obese? It’s bad for them!” she said.

Viewers were shocked by her remarks, and quickly countered her comments online: “Hey friends can y’all report fanfan on Twitch once the site is back up for this sh*tty clip […] body shaming isn’t cool,” wrote Twitter user @ghostfaeries. “I understand that obesity is unhealthy but damn girl. You have NO clue why people are obese. Why do you feel the need to segregate obese people when they’re not bothering you,” tweeted @Irritated_Doc.

The streamer didn’t hesitate in firing back, though, and has made it clear that she stands by what she said: “The whole thing that I was saying was that we should not be glorifying people who are morbidly obese, which makes sense, doesn’t it?

“We should not be seeing someone who has health problems because they ate themselves until obesity and call them brave […] I stand by it.”

All of fanfan’s remarks took place within the span of yesterday’s almost six-hour long stream, with the clip since gaining almost 200k views. She hasn’t gone live since, so while there’s still time for her to apologise, based on her very strongly worded opinions, it seems unlikely that she will.
