The Super Mario Bros. Movie reviews are in and the Rotten Tomatoes score is, well… yikes.
Produced by Illumination, the same company that brought us the ever-popular Minions movie franchise, the highly anticipated animated Super Mario Bros. Movie released in cinemas this week.
Despite questions raised over Chris Pratt’s interpretation of Super Mario, the pre-release trailers looked fantastic. They were colourful, full of humour, and packed with fan-favourite characters, locations and much more. If I were to visualise my ideal Super Mario Bros. big-budget animated movie, it would be this.
However, it doesn't matter where a series of trailers may lead us to believe, it’s the final released product that matters the most. After all, trailers are designed to convince us to part with our cash and will only show us the best parts of the movie in question with added glitter and glam.

So, is the Super Mario Bros. Movie living up to our expectations? Well, it’s fair to say that it’s been a mixed bag of mushrooms at the time of writing.
As of right now, according to Rotten Tomatoes, Super Mario Bros. Movie has a critical score of 54%, which isn't the worst score, but it’s not the best either. Whereas the user score is looking a lot more favourable with a mighty 97%.
In our review of the Super Mario Bros. Movie we said: “This is more than a movie that takes inspiration from the main Mario series, it’s bursting with love for everything about the franchise and gaming in general, and is overall an immensely enjoyable time.”

In this day and age of modern cinema, it’s pretty much a given that most movies will have at least one post-credit scene and Super Mario Bros. Movie is no exception. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is out now in cinemas.
