The fabled Mario movie is almost here, and it sounds like it’s going to be short but sweet.
Back before we saw the first trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who was a bit nervous to see what Illumination would do with the beloved franchise. However, it was quickly apparent that fans are in for a treat - the animation looks gorgeous, and from the clips we’ve seen, it’s clear that the film is full of references to the games that'll be really fun to spot.

Ahead of its April release, it seems we finally have the runtime for the film. As GamesRadar+ reports, the movie’s duration has appeared on the Irish Film Classification Office’s website, and if it’s to be believed, it’ll be 92 minutes long (just over an hour and a half).

As more and more films these days have headed towards (or beyond) the three hour mark, this probably seems a little short. Animated movies do tend to run a bit shorter than live-action ones, however - as GamesRadar+ points out, 2022’s Lightyear has a runtime of 105 minutes, and the highly-acclaimed Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is 103 minutes long. Admittedly, yes, both of these are longer than Mario’s animated adventure, but only by around 10 minutes.
The Irish Film Classification Office notes that there’ll be “mild peril and comic violence”, so definitely don’t go into the film expecting some sort of mature twist on Mario. Following Pedro Pascal’s appearance in SNL’s recent ‘Mario Kart’ sketch, it seems that there’s actually a demand for something of this sort from older fans, although something tells me that’s never going to happen.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is set to hit cinemas on 7 April, so there’s not too long to wait.
