The Godfather fans campaign to remake the 2006 video game

Fans would love to see 2006's The Godfather game remade for modern consoles.

Ah, nostalgia is such a sweet thing. Given that it’s January, you may be thinking about the year ahead and all of the game releases it holds. From time to time though, it’s nice to sway away from the latest AAA releases to take a trip down memory lane.

We all have titles we remember sinking hours into. I’d love to know how much time I spent driving around in The Simpsons: Hit and Run, or stuck on the same levels in the original Crash Bandicoot. Admittedly, I was a small single-digit age when I attempted the latter game, so my lack of skill can be forgiven. For many, one game that oozes nostalgia by the bucket load is The Godfather. Based on the iconic 1972 film of the same name, this 2006 open world action-adventure game saw players assume the role of Aldo Trapani, a non-canon character recruited into the Corleone family.

Speaking of nostalgia, the Silent Hill 2 remake is due to release this year. Take a look at the trailer below.

Admittedly, The Godfather isn’t a game I sampled in 2006. I was likely too busy playing The Sims 2 Pets or Nintendo: Dalmatian & Friends. In retrospect though, I can appreciate what a gem it was. Well, as with many favourites of yesteryear, fans are keen to see it remade or remastered, with one going as far as creating a petition.

Created by Dominick Matiniez, the petition - titled ‘Remaster The Godfather video game for current and next-gen consoles’ - has already amassed 1,487 signatures. It is very close to its goal of 1,500. Explaining why he set up the petition, Dominick wrote, “The Godfather. Do I even have to say much? [...] The game was amazing. The movie was amazing. Now imagine if we remastered it for today’s systems? Better graphics. An enhanced story. More engagement. Better dialogue, and much more. A complete masterpiece.”

He continued, “This is nothing but iconic. An extremely underrated game that everyone loves. Even the second game was amazing along with the second (and third, in my opinion) movie being just as good. The fans want it. We’ve been calling for it for years and now is the perfect time to do it. A Definitive or Remastered edition. Just as Hangar 13 did with Mafia and look how amazingly that turned out. Paramount. Francis. Viscera. WHOEVER.”

The petition was actually set up back in 2020 but continues to find support from fans, with signatures landing as recently as this week as the petition nears its goal. “It needs to happen,” read one comment. “I played the game for 80 hours, restarted it three times, an absolute masterpiece,” added another. While this petition may not lead to a remake, it certainly is important in showing how much appetite there is for the idea.
