The Marvels trailer has a secret message for 'anti-woke' haters

The Marvels trailer includes a hidden message for 'anti-woke' haters that references the tumultuous release of Captain Marvel.

Yesterday saw the release of the first trailer for The Marvels and it easily looks like the best MCU film in years, which fills my heart with joy. Capturing the fun that made us originally fall in love with the MCU, The Marvels will see Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, Iman Vellani’s Miss Marvel, and Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau team up.

It’s clear from the trailer that The Marvels will see the trio body-swapping and switching powers. In fact, the official synopsis teases that our heroes will have to utilise this entanglement to stop a Kree revolution. If you were wondering, yes, Goose the Flerken is also back. It’s no secret that Captain Marvel caused quite a stir upon release for reasons which, quite frankly, make me sad. Marvel Studios are well aware though of those who may try to brand The Marvels as ‘woke’. In fact, they’ve hidden a stark message for haters in the teaser trailer that fans are only just now noticing.

Take a look at the delightful trailer for The Marvels below.

I very distinctly remember going to see Captain Marvel. I’d certainly seen female heroes on screen before, but I’d never seen such a hero actually lead an MCU film, instead of being sat on the sidelines. It gave me chills and I left that screening wondering why it had taken so long, and how cool it would’ve been to see such a film when I was a child. On the other side of the fence though, Brie Larson became the subject of intense slander. Bullies scrutinised her in every possible way, labelled the film as ‘woke’, and invented ‘feuds’ between Larson and the rest of the MCU cast.

One particular sexist comment that was thrown Larson’s way a lot is something I imagine most women will have heard in their lifetime, ‘Smile more.’ At the time, Larson responded by uploading posters of straight-faced male MCU heroes, replacing their nonchalance with a big gleaming smile. It’s true. No one is telling Doctor Strange or Thor to smile more. Well, The Marvels trailer is now reminding haters not to start up again.

As pointed out by Twitter user marvelsupdates, when the Marvel Studios logo eventually pops up in The Marvels trailer, the Beastie Boys’ song ‘Intergalactic’ kicks in. The opening lyrics? “Well, now, don’t you tell me to smile”. A coincidence? I think not. Nicely played, Marvel.
