The first trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie has finally landed, and I'm as surprised as anyone to discover that it actually looks... kind of brilliant?
The upcoming movie - the first based on a Nintendo property in a very long time - is being made collaboratively between Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination, the studio best known for Despicable Me and getting middle-aged women everywhere into memes by creating Minions.
Last year it was announced (to the disbelief of virtually everyone) that The Super Mario Bros. Movie would star Chris Pratt as Mario. It also features Charlie Day (Luigi), Jack Black (Bowser), Anya Taylor-Joy (Peach), and Seth Rogen (Donkey Kong).

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is expected to arrive in cinemas April 7, 2023. It's being directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, and based on a screenplay by Matthew Fogel. Miyamoto confirmed ahead of the trailer that he'd been working closely with Illumination on the project for almost seven years, which is a damn sight longer than anyone spent on that live-action movie.
