Super Mario Bros. Movie to lead to Avengers-style Smash Bros movie, says insider

Super Mario Bros. Movie to lead to Avengers-style Smash Bros movie, says insider

A Super Smash Bros movie could be on the way inspired by The Avengers.

Without question, Nintendo’s Super Mario franchise is one of the most popular properties in the video game industry and now in the world of cinema too.

When The Super Mario Bros. Movie was released earlier in 2023, it became an instant hit exceeding the $1 billion barrier at the global box office. While the critic score was only 59%, the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes currently sits at an impressive 95%. Naturally, considering the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, fans have been calling for a sequel which was seemingly teased by Chris Pratt, the voice of the English-speaking Mario in the animated movie.

While Nintendo hasn't announced a Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 yet, we at least know that a The Legend of Zelda movie is in the works, albeit a live-action adaptation and not animated, sadly. That being said, it makes sense for Nintendo to capitalise on its recent cinematic success and it looks like it will be going big on the silver screen, at least according to an insider.

In an image shared by Reddit user -LastGrail-, insider Daniel Richtman claims that an idea has been pitched to Illumination, the production company behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie, suggesting a potential Marvel’s Avengers-style Super Smash Bros. movie which could include multiple spinoffs.

At this time, we should take the rumour of a Super Smash Bros. universe with a pinch of salt until officially proven otherwise. That being said, Daniel Richtman does have somewhat of a reputable reputation for inside information, so his sources do at least carry some weight. Whether these rumours come to fruition, only time will tell.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is available now on physical release as well as major digital platforms. We’ll keep you posted if we hear of any further developments on a sequel or Super Smash Bros. adaptation.
