The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has officially sold 50 million copies

It’d be an understatement to say The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is one of the greatest open-world games of all time, which is why it’s no surprise to see the title has sold a whopping 50 million copies.

CD Projekt Red struck gold with The Witcher, masterfully crafted its world, story and characters over three games, with the third definitely being the best in the series. It’s even got celebrity endorsement from film superstar, Henry Cavill, who has loved and played the game so much that jumped at the chance to play Geralt in the Netflix series, although that has since come to an end.

It’s been routinely praised by fans and critics since releasing in 2015, seeing releases on the Xbox One and Series X/S, PS4/PS5, PC and a Nintendo Switch port. Now, it’s passed a monumental milestone, selling over 50 million copies, cementing it as one of the top-selling video games of all time.

It’s in good company too, amongst the likes of Red Dead Redemption 2, the Red/Blue/Green/Yellow Pokemon games, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe which have similar sales numbers. Witcher 3 is a long way off the highest-selling games of all time, such as Wii Sports, Tetris, Grand Theft Auto V, and of course, Minecraft.

Regardless it’s still a fantastic achievement and one that’s well deserved. The Witcher 3 is an enormous game yet it’s beautifully made and endlessly replayable, so it’s no wonder why it’s only become more successful following re-releases and increased awareness from the Netflix show.

CD Projekt Red is now looking forward to the next instalments in the series, with the first being codenamed “Polaris”, which will kick off an entirely new trilogy. Very little is known about the upcoming games, but speculation suggests it’ll revolve around Ciri as the main character, as she was essentially a second protagonist alongside Geralt in The Witcher 3.

It’s likely CD Projekt Red will be taking its time with the continuation of The Witcher, especially given the disastrous launch of its other series, Cyberpunk 2077, which started life so badly that it’s recently been admitted into New York’s Museum of Failure.
