Loki season 2 trailer criticised as Jonathan Majors' Kang is here to stay

The trailer for the second season of Loki has finally arrived - and boy oh boy. It looks very good indeed.

It could be a much-needed boost for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Secret Invasion drew to a close last week and it’s fair to say that the show didn’t go down well at all. I was personally thrilled at the idea of a Winter Soldier-esque thriller. What we ended up with though was a series centred around dull conversations, leading up to a - you guessed it - huge CGI fight. The season finale is the lowest-rated MCU episode ever, with a rating of just 7% on Rotten Tomatoes. All the cast performed exceptionally well. It’s just a shame the story was so lacklustre - and of course, there was that controversial retconning ending. Loki’s second season looks far more fun, but fans are critical of the return of Jonathan Majors as Kang.

Earlier this year, Majors was arrested in Manhattan and charged with assault and harassment regarding a domestic dispute with a woman, aged 30. The female victim was treated in hospital for “minor injuries to her head and neck”, local authorities confirmed. Majors’ legal team denied the allegations, adding that they’d clear the actor of all charges. The victim later recanted their statement, while Majors’ criminal defence lawyer Prita Chaudhry released text messages exchanged between Majors and the victim which she claims supports Majors’ case of innocence.

Several other women then came forward with further allegations of abuse. They’re said to be working with the New York District Attorney’s office. Since then, Majors has been dropped by his talent agency, and was cut from the film The Man In My Basement. His invitation to the 2023 Met Gala was withdrawn and both the US Army and the Texas Rangers have pulled ad campaigns.

Despite the allegations, Majors has retained his role as Kang in the MCU. He was last seen in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania which was released in February 2023, one month before the allegations were made. Kang’s appearance - this time as variant Victor Timely - in the Loki season two trailer marks Majors return to the MCU following the allegations.

Taking to the X, formerly Twitter, fans expressed their disdain. AJBurlap wrote, “They should recast Majors regardless of which character he's playing, but Kang is such an easy character to recast they have no excuse not to,” while obiwansbestie added, “Marvel please recast Kang with John Boyega LIKE HE WOULD BE AMAZING.”

To provide context, Majors is believed to feature in two episodes - both of which were filmed before the allegations were made. There’s also the ongoing actors' strike. It stands to reason that Marvel could recast following the end of the strike, or they’re simply waiting to see what comes of the latest allegations. Either way, they’ve got a marketing nightmare on their hands.
