Assassin's Creed future setting leaked, and fans seem super excited

Are things about to get more futuristic?

Could some parts of the Assassin’s Creed games be heading into the future? It’s definitely a possibility given some new material that surfaced around the launch of Assassin’s Creed Mirage, the latest in the franchise.

The series has always featured some kind of modern-day storyline that deals with the lineage of the assassins we play as in the historical majority of the games. With Mirage, some dataminers found an audio clip that could point to a shift into the future for the modern-day protagonists.

Codename Red is going to finally take us to Japan for samurais and ninjas

What transpires in this audio is two Animus operators discussing the 21st century as ‘ancient history’. There is also something called ‘The Great Shift’ mentioned, which could point to something happening in the 21st century. With this being mentioned in this past tense, could it be that the operators are from the 22nd century? Or further ahead?

This audio appeared under the heading ‘Neo’ which is the Ubisoft codename for Assassin’s Creed Hexe, so it’s all pointing to taking place in the upcoming game. But does this mean that the whole game will be set in the future, maybe as a culmination of all our years of training? Or perhaps we’ll see duel stories taking place over two timelines?

Many fans would be happy to see a game set in the future, this includes members of Reddit who are discussing this theory. “Dystopian cyberpunk style Assassins Creed would be so cool. Something like Blade Runner meets parkour.” says one Redditor, though many are lamenting the loss of Desmond’s story, the character we once followed through the modern day. One fan theorises “It seems like Infinity won’t be just a launcher, but rather “infinity” is the new modern-day setting in which all the new Assassins Creed games take place.” referring to the upcoming launcher hub for the franchise. We’ll have to wait and see what happens after the next game codenamed Red, takes us to Japan.
