Call of Duty has been around for twenty long years and for better or worse, it’s gone through many changes.
For the most part, the Call of Duty series has been about grounded, military combat - especially when it comes to its multiplayer offerings. Perhaps the highlights of the series are the Modern Warfare entries, as well as those games set during the two World Wars.

However, in 2014, the series had a massive shift in direction with the release of Advanced Warfare. What was wrong with Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, I hear you ask? Well, despite starring the endlessly charming Troy Baker, the issue that some fans may have had with this game was with the introduction of jetpacks.

In defence of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, it was set in the year 2054, so it stands to reason why it had loads of fancy futuristic gadgets and weaponry. Unfortunately, when it came to its multiplayer, it was full of so much bunny hopping antics, that it would put even Halo to shame.
The jetpack antics in Advanced Warfare would eventually make their way into Black Ops III and Infinite Warfare. Thankfully, at least for some, the Call of Duty series would return to its more grounded formula, the latter of which being Modern Warfare II (2022). Yet on Twitter, fans have been discussing the desire for jetpacks to make a return in the series.
“Should jetpacks make a return in Call of Duty?” asked a fan account on Twitter ModernWarzone, and it seems that much of the community is somewhat torn on that prospect.
“I wish CoD had each developer stick to their speciality, so we got a different style of CoD with each release,” suggested HiddenXperia. "Infinity Ward to focus on modern boots-on-the-ground games. Treyarch focuses on historical boots-on-the-ground, and Sledgehammer Games focuses on futuristic and mechanically experimental games.” To be honest, that’s a fair shout.

“Wouldn't mind a jetpack CoD every five to six years tbh. Makes for an interesting change and would be a nice change in Warzone,” said Tom Henderson.
“Absolutely not,” replied a defiant Liter of Cola. “No, they already ruined the game once,” grimaced BeachGolf.
For the most part, it actually seems the majority of the thread would like to see jetpacks return. Personally, I am not a fan. That being said, the series could probably do with a reset, so perhaps jetpacks might still have a place in the series.
In related news, rumours are making the rounds that Call of Duty in 2025 will feature remastered maps from Black Ops II. As for the immediate future, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III has a release date of 10 November for PC, PlayStation and Xbox.
