Cyberpunk 2077 sequel release date is a long way off, CD Projekt confirms

Cyberpunk 2077 sequel release date is a long way off, CD Projekt confirms

Time for patience

It's understandable that the Cyberpunk 2077 renaissance is causing some players to ask about a sequel. There's one on the way, but a vast amount of patience will be needed for this one.

Capitalising on the hype from update 2.0 and the DLC Phantom Liberty sequel talk has begun. In a 5 October investor's call CD Projekt Red shared a few details on the sequel; mostly that it was in a "conceptual stage" and that a team of veterans will be designing it.

The CEO, Adam Badowski, explained it's too early in development for updates beyond what was said about the Phantom Liberty designers taking the helm. This means that the sequel is a fair few years away. We wouldn't be surprised if it misses this console generation and is aiming at the next.

Phantom Liberty has created such a positive buzz around the game that players are flocking to the game, racking up over 25 million purchases of the title since its December 2020 release, when things weren't going well for the game.

Players are now seeing all the positive changes CDPR implemented to bring the game to a stellar level of quality. However, we'll all need bucketloads of patience as we wait for more news on the sequel. Will we be back in Night City? Will we see returning characters?

It was reported recently that during the CDPR investor's call, the company spent over $120 million saving the reputation of Cyberpunk 2077. It cost around $85 million just to make and market Phantom Liberty, proving the CDPR not only love their franchise, but they want it to work and succeed. Thankfully the game is selling well since the 2.0 update which overhauled the game.

Hopefully they continue to see success and we get to watch as the 2077 universe expands with more Edgerunners anime and a live-action TV show in the works.
