District 9 director teases live-action DOOM movie

It’s an incredibly exciting time for video game adaptations. There have been several gems over the years, but it feels as if we’re entering an age where film creatives are truly beginning to nail down exactly what makes a great adaptation.

HBO’s The Last of Us kicked off the year on a high, with many claiming it to be the ‘greatest video game adaptation of all time’. The Super Mario Bros. Movie then continued the train of success, surpassing the $1 billion mark at the global box office. It also had the biggest opening ever for an animated film, which is particularly impressive when you consider how the box office has struggled in the post-pandemic era. In recent weeks, fans were impressed by the first trailer for Twisted Metal, and Gran Turismo doesn’t look too bad either. Today though, I bring you news of a potential DOOM movie.

As reported by GGRecon, the iconic DOOM may be getting the adaptation treatment but that’s not even the best part. The news has been teased by District 9 director Neill Blomkamp. Over on Twitter, the director posted two images of the classic gaming franchise, sparking the rumours. Neither image was captioned. Admittedly, it’s not a lot to go on and Blomkamp could simply be a fan. Given the current adaptation trend though, DOOM would certainly be a great choice for the director.

Blomkamp isn’t simply known for District 9. In fact, DOOM wouldn’t even be his first video game adaptation as Blomkamp recently directed the soon-to-be-released Gran Turismo. He also directed 2013’s Elysium.

Fans are very much excited by the prospect. One user wrote, “Please tell me this is a sign,” while another added, “Oh finally, we’ve been waiting for a decent movie adaptation of this iconic game.” You may recall that DOOM was adapted into a film in 2005 starring The Rock but I think we can all agree that there’s room for improvement.
