'Cyberpunk 2077' Topples 'World Of Warcraft' As Fastest-Selling PC Game Ever

'Cyberpunk 2077' Topples 'World Of Warcraft' As Fastest-Selling PC Game Ever

And that's without counting the orders on the day of release.

Cyberpunk 2077 is now the fastest ever selling PC game toppling Activision Blizzard's World of Warcraft for the title. The RPG set in a not too distant future has been the talk of the games industry this month for several reasons - some positive and some, uh, not so positive. But when it comes to numbers, there is no denying its impressive performance.

First reported by GamesIndustry.biz, Cyberpunk 2077's preorders exceeded 8 million with an astonishing 74% of those orders coming from digital purchases. Although there are many who bought the game to play on both current-gen consoles like PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and next gen's PS5 and Xbox Series X - the majority of orders for Cyberpunk 2077 came from PC players; 59% in fact.

This means that the number of PC gamers ready to play the game at launch was 4.72 million - we can't imagine ever seeing that many PCs, let alone the number of people that represents. The previous record for the fastest-selling PC game was World of Warcraft's new Shadowlands expansion which released on October 27th - a short but respectable reign with 3.7 million sales on day one.

We don't blame people wanting to play Cyberpunk 2077 mostly on PC. Although it has released as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X landed - the version of the game that has come to consoles is reportedly disappointing. So much so that the team at CD Projekt Red has had to apologise to players and explain that several updates and patches will be released to bring the game to where it needs to be. Gameplay bugs, glitches, and more are plaguing console players and so if you are going to play Cyberpunk by the end of 2020, it's almost certainly a better choice to pick it up on a high-end PC rather than console.
