Rockstar Games might be keeping us in the dark about Grand Theft Auto 6, but occasionally an eensy-weensy rumour emerges from the depths of the internet. This one claims that players will earn in-game cryptocurrency from missions, raising a fair share of eyebrows.

It's been seven years since the release of Grand Theft Auto 5, and understandably, fans are getting a little antsy when it comes to news about the next entry in the series. Still, Rockstar Games is steadfastly supporting Grand Theft Auto Online and Red Dead Online with continual content updates, like the new arenas for the Deadline mode and new Target and Open Target Races respectively. So, it's down to us to put together the pieces on the latest game while the company keeps mum. We know that the developer is definitely working on Grand Theft Auto 6, and that it's going to be "moderately sized" at the start. There's been a lot of talk about an '80s setting, whereas others assert it will take place in the modern day like its predecessor.

While you're here, take a pew and watch a compilation of the most hilarious moments from Grand Theft Auto 5 below.

Tom Henderson, a leaker who has gained notoriety for his reliable track record on Call Of Duty, shared what he'd heard about cryptocurrency in Grand Theft Auto 6 and how it might work. "Some missions will reward you in bitcoin instead of cash," explained Henderson in a post to Twitter. "The stock market feature will return, with the addition of a broker for different cryptocurrencies... These payments will come from the more higher up characters that needs [sic] to transfer high amounts of 'untraceable cash and fast'." Henderson clarified that this is a fictional cryptocurrency system that only occurs within Grand Theft Auto 6 and won't be linked to any of the many, many, many real cryptocurrencies out there. It won't be named after bitcoin, but it will likely have some sort of a wink and a nudge in that direction.

My qualm is that how has it taken this long for a rumour like this to emerge? Cryptocurrency is hardly a new contender into the world of economics. Furthermore, a system such as this would require a lot of time and effort to ensure that it was integrated correctly into the rest of the game, and that players feel favourable towards the feature through feedback sessions. Sure, Grand Theft Auto has a tendency to ridicule the latest trends in its characters and writing, but the recency of this rumour raises suspicion, for me at least. Then again, Tom Henderson is usually on the money when it comes to leaks about Battlefield and Call of Duty: Warzone. We'll let you know when we learn more.
